Play School

Another children’s TV show. It’s the predecessor of Playdays and bares a lot of simlilarities. I vaguely remember it because it ran through until the 80s but it was a classic. It started in 1964 – 1988 and was broadcasted around the world. It was big in the Uk and Canada and New Zealand and Austrailia had their own versions of the show. This is just one of several opening themes to the UK version :-

It was educational and encouraged children to sing a long to the songs and dance. Here’s a good example one of the videos I found on jelly, which made me laugh:-

Playdays

I remember watching this in my childhood and always rushing to the TV to watch it. Playdays was a children’s television program on CBBC that was designed to educate. It ran from 1988 – 1997.

The presenters were good but what I loved most about the show is that it had puppets as the main characters. A cat called Poppy, a rag doll named Peggy Patch and Why Bird. The most memorable part of it is the introduction with the Playdays bus driving along to the theme song and stops at the bus stop.

The program ran a few days a week but it’s insperational because it encouraged children to participate in the act of play and learning new things. Depending on the day there was different activities, such as pictures for stories, songs and music, creating something to do with the current show’s theme. The best activities involved using shapes to develop problem solving abilities, making objects with various materials, and themes where pretending to be something and acting it out. For example in one episode the characters pretend to be ‘cooks’ and make paper meals.

Cake Yo!

I was browsing the internet today, the idea of having a video game themed party intruiged me. Not that it’s anyones birthday yet but I’d thought it would be fun! Anyway..browsing the interweb and came across a cool website that gives you ingredients on how to make different game themed goodies.  Anything from moogle cupcakes, pac man sugar cookies, x-box 360 cake and lots of other random treats :

Also came across a few others randomly found whilst looking through google, thought I’d put some pics up because they’re awesome!!!

Visual Kei

Among Jrock (Japanese rock music) I discovered about a year ago, a movement called ‘Visual Kei’ which I was instantly drawn to. The movement itself is effectively boy bands which dress in an eccentric way and wear lots of makeup. There is more to it than that though in case you were wondering! The music is a sub-genre of Jrock but contains it own unique sound with ranges from metal, punk, glam rock and goth rock, also the influence of western culture. Their image which is equally important to them as their music or even more so. They have crazy hairstlyes, dress in what some people would say ‘costumes’ (but I find the clothing is very elaberate) and wear interesting makeup and, some but not all, wear eye contacts.

The first few bands I came across were Dir En Grey, Luna Sea and Malice Mizer. Their names are popular over in the UK aswell. As I starting looking more into Visual Kei i found myself liking bands such as Alice Nine, Hyde, The Gazette and a band which I truly love DIO – Distraught Overlord.

Distraught Overlord

Distraught Overlord

Distraught Overlord are from Tokyo. They’re one of the best heavy bands I’ve heard so far from Japan and was really impressed with their look too. They have quite a thrashy sound to them with occasional growling (which is good I don’t like too much growly stuff) and rounded off by abit of melody with the vocals. Yay for Mikaru! (lead singer). With the release of their singles and mini albums they’ve been increasingly more popular and have been travelling around europe alot and hopefully get to see them in London *fingers crossed*

Heres a video of the first DIO song i got into, Garasu No Umi:-

I don’t have much else to say, apart from if you haven’t already checked Visual Kei out go! what have you got to loose!

Dark Knight Joker test makeup

Tried the makeup today on Andy. Must say doesn’t look too bad he’s got the manic look down perfectly. Just can’t wait to see what he looks like in the costume too.

Doom 1993

12doom2.jpg

Doom was an innovative and hugely influential fps game. although its predecessor Wolfenstein 3D released in 1992 used almost the same engine but wasn’t near enough as atmospheric as doom. It was (and still is) hugely recognised for it’s immersive qualities with 3D graphics, sound effects and scary atmosphere. Games today are shaped from the revolutionary ‘lighting’ effects system that doom had; the flickering corridor lights and dark corners were a nice touch. Also the game introduced stairs, lifts and teleporters into game play.
